The VPA provides a range of professional development programs for principals, assistant principals and aspiring school leaders each term. Programs are designed to meet the needs of members, and are run by the Association.



Reports for the 21st Century - Workshop Full

Date: Thursday 20th April

VPA and the VASSP are offering this new, morning workshop, facilitated by Rob Newton designed to engage you in a discussion about the powers of continuous reporting and how feedback helps schools engage parents in their child’s learning.

The workshop is designed to assist principals, assistant principals and curriculum leaders to consider a less time consuming, more powerful, yet simpler reporting system that has the power to dramatically improve learning at your school.



Difficult Conversations

VPA and VASSP are offering this highly interactive workshop, facilitated by Marie Ghirardello, designed to give you an edge when conducting potentially difficult conversations with parents or staff. The workshop session will include:

The Path to Principalship

Date: Tuesday 16th May

VPA and VASSP are offering a full day workshop, facilitated by Geoff Barclay, designed to give an edge when applying for Principal Class positions.

How to Avoid the MPB

Date: Thursday 18th May
Cost: Free
Venue: VPA Office, North Melbourne

VPA and VASSP are offering a workshop designed, facilitated by Peter Hibbins, to inform school leaders about the role of the Merit Protection Board. The Workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Excess procedures
  • Time fraction changes
  • Granting of leave, for example family leave
  • Referrals/Compassionate transfers
  • Performance issues and complaints
  • Selection processes - ongoing/fixed term/higher duties
  • File noting
  • Your questions answered




Communicating to your school community through your school newsletter

Date: Friday 19th May
Cost: Members $80, Non-Members $110
Venue: VPA Office, North Melbourne

VPA and VASSP are offering this morning workshop, facilitated by Caroline Milburn, designed to help you improve the effectiveness of your school newsletter. The workshop session will include:

  • Identifying common problems
  • Strategies to sharpen your messaging
  • Practical tips on how to source ideas and target your audience
  • Key elements of effective newsletters




Wellbeing Empowering Leaders (WEL)

Date: Thursday 25 May, Friday 26 May and Friday 1 August 9.00am - 4.00pm

Cost: Members $350, Non-Members $500

Venue: VPA Office, North Melbourne


This three day professional learning pilot program for principals, compiled by Gabrielle Leigh, will help you to establish strategies and mechanisms to care for yourself as a leader.
The program includes:

  • Development of your own health and wellbeing strategy
  • Presentation by Associate Professor Phil Riley 
  • Conflict Resolution and Tough Conversations workshop with Michael Hawton 
  • Five hours of individual coaching around developing your plan for the future

Leading people can be a tough gig. You are expected to manage your own workload, emotions and
issues; support those with possible mental health concerns; implement change initiatives; and deal with
underperformance in a complex and constantly changing legal environment… all whilst maintaining
morale and productivity.

Returning again in 2017, this popular two day program will give you the skills to understand and
manage these issues pro-actively and confidently.
